If the grievance handling system is effective, aggrieved employees can relieve their
feelings of dissatisfaction/injustice with their employment, promptness in the
handling of grievances is ensured and larger problems (like strikes) are
prevented from occurring in the future by solving smaller problems early. These
contribute to the creation of trust and cooperation between union and management,
and then to favorable labor-management relationships. Grievance handling is of importance
for any organization on enhancing employee motivation, productivity, and
labor-management relationship.
It is generally accepted that a formal grievance settlement program isn't common in many industries in Sri Lanka. In some industries, workers are used to meeting directly with the CEO who is more likely to tend to give snap decisions to satisfy workers without consulting the relevant line managers resulting in making more subjective and incorrect decisions, creating bad precedents, and undermining the morale of the line managers.
2.2 Objectives of a Grievance Handling Procedure
Jackson (2000) lays down the objectives of a
grievance handling procedure as follows:
- To enable the employee to air his/her grievance.
- To clarify the nature of the grievance.
- To investigate the reasons for dissatisfaction.
- To obtain, where possible, a speedy resolution to the
problem.
- To take appropriate actions and ensure that promises are
kept.
- To inform the employee of his or her right to take the
grievance to the next stage

A dissatisfied and unhappy employee will not be
able to perform to the best of his ability. His mind will be preoccupied with
the things that are bothering him which leads to a lack of focus on his current
job a hand. It leads to a drop in productivity of service and efficiency of the employee
and the telecommunication industry as a whole.
Below are some of the effects of
employee grievance:
2.4 Employee Grievance Handling Effect on the Telecommunication Industry.
The grievance which
indicated discontent and dissatisfaction among employees adversely affects
their productivity of service in the telecommunication industry. Initiating timely action to deal with grievances, the
telecommunication tends to lose the productive efforts of the disconnected employee.
It is indeed unrealistic to assume that an aggrieved or dissatisfied employee
will put his or her best efforts on the job. The redressal of the employees’
grievance, therefore, assumes importance.
Following are some effects of grievance handling:
Ø It encourages employees to raise concerns without fear of reprisal.
Ø It provides a fair and speedily means of dealing
with complaints.
Ø It prevents minor disagreements from
developing into more serious disputes.
Ø It is a channel for an aggrieved employee to
express and present his or her grievance.
Ø It saves employers time and money as
solutions are found for workplace problems. It helps to build an industry climate based on openness and trust.
Ø It is an assurance for dispassionate handling
of one’s grievance.
Ø It assures the availability of some machinery for prompt handling of grievances.
Ø An aggressive employee can release his or her
feelings of discontent or dissatisfaction with their job.

DeleteGrievances that are not addressed in time create inefficiencies in the workplace and lower morale. This can lead to an increase in low morale, absenteeism, and high employee turnover rates - none of which are good for the organization. There are many reasons why employee grievances can be raised, but regardless of the cause, taking good care of the workers should be central to every organization.
HR staff must find effective ways to deal with every formal grievance lodged, whether genuine or imagined.
You’re absolutely right. Unfortunately, in many industries in Sri Lanka, employee grievances are underestimated. It reduces employee productivity as well as efficiency. Care must be taken to eliminate it so that employee grievances do not arise.
